A “How-To” For Visiting Izakaya In Japan

I recently made a contribution to Matcha Japan Travel Magazine17204567_10154527935442569_76284645_n which explains the basics of visiting an izakaya for English speakers. For those who don’t know, an izakaya is a uniquely Japanese take on a bar or pub.

Those who’ve been will know that you really can’t visit Japan without trying out an izakaya once (or thirty-seven times). But it’s not without its challenges …and that’s where this article comes in.

If you should feel so inclined, head on over to Matcha and check it out –

  1. This would have been perfect when my wife and I visited an Izakaya for the first time and we tried asking for water in English and received 2 beer’s haha. I’ll be book marking this for our next trip to Japan and I loved the phrases and a vocab summary at the end!
